on F-6 I have read where to find VIN. Haven't tried yet. I assume is should be visible with out removing anything. The tag in glove box says engine#. Is this the number I should find on the frame and engine if engine hasn't been changed. Where is this # on engine.

I'm assuming you mean the SERIAL number, since prior to 1954 there was no such thing as a VIN. Yes, the number on the Rating plate on the glove box door should be the same SERIAL number that is stamped in the right side frame rail near the radiator. The term 'Engine number' was left over from the older Fords, before 1948 Ford used the number stamped on the engine (bellhousing) as the identification number, if the engine was changed in the truck, the dealers had a set of the correct stamps and were supposed to stamp the correct number on the 'new' engine. But starting with the 1948 model Trucks Ford did away with that system and did not stamp a number on the engines, instead using the number stamped on the frame for identification.
Joe is right, it is not on the late series engine - and you'll find the serial number in 3 places: on the top frame rail (usually right side), and on the data plate (firewall above the battery for a V8) and on the rating plate on the glovebox door.
Even the earlier engines weren't numbered unless state demanded it. The serial number was stamped at the factory on the bellhousing flange (clutch housing) of the transmission. Ford figured the engines would wear out and be replaced before the transmissions.
