Invasion started in February. Secured March 16. Meanwhile, my dad was waiting to go on to Okinawa on D-day + 10, April 10th or 11th, depending on how you count it. Can't ask him, too late. Okinawa was the last battle of the war, a bigger battle with more casualties. But Iwo got the press. The image of the flag being far more appealing than the flamethrower into a cave full of civilians and soldiers......

My Step-dad was in Guadalcanal. He really lucked out, the Marine transport ship, he was on, broke its rudder and they couldn't get close enough to launch the shore craft.
