I have an 05 super duty with the 5.4 117,000 miles.been using motorcraft 5w-20 and motorcraft filter.as of late I have been hearing and reading about people having issues with the motorcraft oil..would like to hear everyones opinions and suggestions..thanks in advance..
Where have you heard that people are having problems with Motorcraft oil? Motorcraft is an excellent oil made by ConocoPhillips and works great. It holds up just as well as any other syn blend oil. I'd use it with confidence for oil change intervals of 5000 miles. If it's burning or leaking any oil, a high mileage oil like Valvoline Maxlife may help. (Maxlife is what I'm using) If you want to go longer than 5000 miles, then I would step up to a full synthetic like Mobil 1 or Pennzoil Platinum.
Motorcraft FL-820S filter, and S is important(silicone back-flow valve). Mobil 1 fully synthetic 5W-20 oil every 4-5K. Probably little overkill, but IMO, small price to pay for happy, long lasting engine. Had over 260K on my previous truck and ticker never mist a beat.
Why switch from what has worked? If it's not using oil (not a leak) I might step up another notch to 10W-30/40 in the summer. My last V10 at 90K and the last 5.4 at 100K on M'craft and an FL-820S filter never went through any, including pulling heavy travel trailer. And my current 6.7 diesel - it also gets Motorcraft oil and filters as recommended by the owner's manual. The gassers 6-7 quarts got changed at 3-4000 miles, the diesel gets it done, 13 quarts, at 5-7000 miles(or when the dash monitor says so)
If your buddies are the ones who have said there are 'problems' with Motorcraft, you need real information, not hearsay or what may be on a forum(other then here).
Not saying MCraft oil is bad. Just shearing my experience with Mobil1 and my opinion is-it works wonders. On another hand, MCraft filters are only ones I used on Fords.
Nothing wrong with Mobil 1 (except cost) if it meets diesel requirements for those of us that have gone that way. It for sure will work great in any gassers. I used it in a couple long gone T-birds and do use it in my '31 street rod with a modified 5.0.
if you change it often, what ever that is on sale that meets your vehicle spec.
if you are one of these folks who want to get 10 years out of a battery and 7500 miles out of 25 dollars of oil, get an extended drain oil formulation.
My previous (3) 5.4L's all were switched to Amsoil, no issues to report....My current 5.4L has Mobil 1 and is running well without issues...When the next change is due it will make the switch to Amsoil..

What do you usually pay per oil change to use Amsoil ?? I have Amsoil in everything other than the motor
I've used Mobil 1 full synthetic in my sd since 13k miles. In my van I use whatever good brand is on sale. Valvoline, havoline, castrol, motorcraft, etc.
