Generator vs alternator

Greetings forum! I've got an old 64 F-500 I'm getting road-worthy again. I have a charging system that either needs an overhaul or an upgrade to an alternator. I'm considering the swap over the repair but I'd love to hear advice from you guys. For the swap, are there any recommendations for a specific alternator that will supply a bolt-up bracket or is this a fab job?

On which engine?

Powermaster make alternators that look like generators and have the same mounting dimensions. They are expensive, though.

It's the 292.

John Mummert produces a real nice cast Aluminum Alternator bracket. HOME PAGE

I've also seen brackets on eBay. Search Y Block Alternator and a few options come up.

I don't know how well it would work with the 292 but I just did the 3G alternator swap on my 64 F100. For me it was a bolt on swap but I have a 351m instead of the stock 292. I have a write up in my build thread in my signature. Cost me around $30 for the alt from the junkyard plus the cost of a couple of 14ga wires and a maxi fuse holder.
