292 Build

Hi,

I'm about to begin a mild 292 build for my 64 f100. The 292 will be mated with a T5 and the stock 3.89 gear ratio. I will drive more on weekends and to car shows. I would like something that is fun to drive. What does everyone think of this combo:

-ECZ-G Heads
-Mummert Intake
-Mummert Cam: Y270, Y280-I-7, Y280-I-11, or Y284.
-Ram Horns
-4 barrel carb (undecided)

I already have the ram horns and bare ECZ-G heads. With respect to the heads, is it worth having them ported? It is an additional $500 ($900 total). Would it depend on the cam (mild vs aggressive)?

Also, which of the Mummert cams above would be best for this combo? I would rather not have to pay a lot for additional machine work.

Thanks.

Nick

270 cam very slight lope works good in my opinion. 650 holley carb with manual choke if you are wanting to keep the dash looking right. I used Redds headers on mine and the intake was a Blue Thunder because Mummert had none of his available at the time

Forgot to add use Best Gaskets gasket set do not use Felpro. I used Felpro and the head gaskets are leaking. I did a search and it seems everyone who has used Felpro have had the same issue. Problem solved with Best Gaskets I am told. Mine are on the way from Mummert. Also you may consider getting the rubber valve cover gaskets from him and an ARP head stud kit for better clamp on the heads as well.

Be careful, I can only relate my true experience. I used mummerts solid lifters in a brand new y-block build and, due to bad metallurgy, they "went away" within a few hundred miles. He didn't stand behind them and guess where all the lost metal went?!

There are many reasons for lifters to fail. Here's a link to a list of reasons.

Eaton Balancing » Camshaft and Lifter Failure Causes

Mummert sells top quality parts but even the best parts can have a bad run so it is possible his lifters are to blame. But, you have to determine the actual cause of the failure.

To prevent driving a few hundred miles with a cam or lifters going out:
- Pay attention to any noise during break in. Shut it down and find the problem. The 20 minute break in does not have to occur all at once so shutting it down does not cause any problem. Solve the problem and resume where you left off, to complete the break in.
- Check the valve lash after the break in. If any are loose, determine why and make note of which ones were loose.
- After 100 miles or so, do another check just to verify things.
- Pay attention to the sounds your engine makes. It will let you know if there is a problem and if you don't ignore it, you may be able to fix it before it is too late.

I used Mummerts cam and lifters and have over 25K miles on them and lots of miles on many of his other parts.
