I have a question regarding aftermarket electronic transmission controllers. I have recently purchased my first PSD (see details below), as well as a 10,000 GVWR travel trailer. I am thinking about modifying this truck to make pulling this trailer through the Rockies a bit more comfortable. In reviewing the other posts on FTE, some folks recommend 4" exhaust, then performance chips. Also, there is some recommendations for gauges, especially tranny fluid temp. Since I am a bit paranoid about cooking my tranny, I definitely plan on adding a tranny temp gauge, EGT gauge, and possibly a turbo boost gauge (although I am a little unclear of the benefit of the turbo gauges).
Anyway, my question relates to aftermarket tranny controllers that lock the torque converter. Why is this important? When is the torque converter typically locked, and unlocked (i.e., per factory settings)? If I do decide to get one of these modules, who makes a good one? I read where Western Diesel packages an exhaust brake and TC lock together. Furthermore, what about an aftermarket torque converter. Does anyone reading this have one installed? If so, based on my truck and trailer, do you think this should even be a concern?
Your thoughts and comments please.
Furthermore, I am open to ALL input as to the most beneficial (read "cost/benefit analysis") mod's for pulling this trailer.
After re-reading this, I know I have more than one question, so feel free to reply to any part of this.
lucas_diesel_fan, I'll give it a shot... I don't have a diesel, used to...but a few things I know about mods to them...You want to definitely put in a tranny gauge, the turbo gauge is to see your boost. A 4 inch exhaust and chip would most DEFINITELY help with power. You might want to concider a after market air intake. Of you really want to get crazy, my father-in-law ran propane injection in his Cummins, that gave him about an extra 120hp. Another great mod for a diesel is bigger injectors. Exhaust brakes help you slow down in the hills a lot easier without killing your brakes, in the winter it'll help your truck warm up faster. Over all, a great safety fueature especially since your going to go up in the Rockies...
Lucas, be sure to check out the Excusion and 7.3 PSD forums on the ford-truck forum's home page. There is a great deal of discussion there about towing, exhaust upgrades, chips, etc., that you'll be interested in reading. Stan
