I am afraid I may have jinxed myself the other day when I asked if "all of us with 99 automatics are doomed". Well, maybe not necessarily. I was in getting my Missouri safety inspection at a Ford dealer and asked them if everything sounded ok. I mentioned to him that another mechanic said there was a whining sound coming from the bell housing. He didn't notice or mention this sound, but did make note of a rattling sound while it idles. His quick opinion was that the torque convertor was going bad. I think it is a given that I will be getting a second opinion before doing anything about it. Do you guys think he might be right with this diagnosis based on the sound alone? He estimated about 7 hours labor and a total cost with parts of $800-$1000. Would you have a transmission repaired by the dealer or would it be better & less expensive to find a good transmission shop. I have not yet noticed anything significant with the shifting or driving of the truck? If this is the problem would you say it will gradually get worse or will it all go out at once and leave me stranded.
I would suggest going to a good transmission shop and have them diagnose your problem. There are some that will do so for free or at little cost. The Ford dealerships will do what is in the best interest of Ford, not necessarly you the consumer. The whining sound may very well be the torque converter, but it's hard to say. A reputable shop will be able to tell for sure.
If you replace your converter with a stock converter use a XL3z-7902-DRM. It is a upgraded converter that will not rattle in the future. I just replaced mine.
Did it fix your problem Jimmy_Megginson? I have the same problem and I took it to a transmission shop and they could'nt find anything wrong with it by doing a converter lock up, checking codes or anything. They felt it wasnt anything to worry about. There is a customer concern out on this converter and it does say to replace it with the XL#Z-7902-DARM but it also says that it only takes 3.2 hrs for a 4x2 and 4.1 hrs for a 4x4 to replace.

If they are not familiar with a 4R100 torque converter rattle I would recomend picking a different shop to work on it. The XL3Z-7902-DRM is definetly a fix. My truck is much quieter.
