Changing a starter with headers on???

I have a inline six with headers. I did notice when installing the headers it looked like a tight fit. Yesterday my starter I believe crapped out. At least jumping and changing the relay didn't do anything. I just hear a like a loud knock when trying to start the truck. I am wondering if I can get the starter out and a new one in with the headers there? It looks like it will be tricky. They are dynomax headers.
Thanks,
Chris

I can get the starter out through my Hedmans, but it isn't fun. I have to pry the tubes apart with a pry bar and it will barely slip through.

That sounds about what I was thinking about doing. I beleive the Hedmans are almost the same style as the dynomax where they use the two headers. One looks like it is about 2 or 3 " from the nose of the starter. Does that sound about right?
Thanks,
Chris

I think mine are even closer than that. When I change mine I have to tilt it up and twist it around to get it to come out. I don't remember the exact procedure, but it takes several movements of the starter to get it lined up properly with the gap in the headers.

I figured I would need to pitch it to come out. Thanks for the info, I gotta make sure it is the starter. I tried a new relay and even bypassed the relay but I just get nothing at all. No clicking no nothing I wonder if it could be the cable or connction going to the starter. I would think it would of either shown eigns of going, or even would make a clicking noise.

I've my truck more than 20 years and I've lost track how many times I have replaced the drive or the whole starter. They don't always show any signs of failure before it happens. I have Cyclone headers and the starter will almost come out but not quite. I have to put a pipe clamp on and pull the headers over to get enough room. If I were to put a just right dent in the oil pan it would come right out. I might do that next time. And there will be a next time.

On my Cliffy, my stock BIG started was a pain to get out but it'd get out with a little finesse. I bought myself a mini when the stock one crapped and it just fits right through there perfectly.

I was thinking of doing that actually what mini starter did you do with? Will the small block ones work?
Thanks,
Chris

Changing a starter with headers on???

I just finished up replacing my starter on my six. Believe it or not it was one of the easiest starters I did. Turns out the problem was not the starter but the cable. Since the bolt broke off and was all rusted up I decided to replace it with a brandy new one. The dynomax headers allowed me to tip the starter up and drop it down on the header tubes from there tok a cats paw and ever slightly opened it up, and it came falling out!!! To install the new one I didn't even pry them apart, I put the cone end in forst lifteed it all the way through turned it horizontally and it poped right into the bell housing. Just figured I would let you guys know how I made out and for future reference anyone else wondering. You cna't believe how many people told me I had to remove the headers. Thanks for all the replies guys!!!

Any of the smallblock pattern starters will work...I bought one from Advance Auto, and it's a hell of alot smaller than my stock one, with gear reduction and a lifetime warentee to boot.
