Was using my truck to haul a dump trailer load of wood Sunday. Trailer is 12'x7' and I had it loaded as full as I could with heavy ash. Had the bed of the truck about half full. I didn't have to pull any grades but had about a 30 mile trip home running about 50 mph. When I got home and stopes I could smell burnt brakes or clutch. I tried to smell around the wheels but seemed like it was coming from under the cab. Truck has 4.10 gears and it didn't seem to slip any at all.
Question is would that be normal smell when working the clutch hard with a heavy load like that? I suspect it is original because I just turned 135,000 miles. I have only owned the truck for 2 years.
If the clutch is original, I'd pull the inspection cover to see how the dual mass flywheel is. You won't be able to tell if its slipping that way, but you can see if you have a stock dmf or if its been converted to a single.
I'd also check to see if the rear brakes are hanging up, or trashed.
Okay thanks I think I will check the brakes because I went for a short drive today and noticed the brake smell when I got home just ever so faintly. No vibration and I put it in 4th gear and let out slowly and it died pretty quick didn't feel anything slip.
