Exhaust Pipe

I am thinking changing to a 4" exhaust pipe. Of course I am getting conflicting information. One expert tells me that I have a 3" catalytic converter and it will negate all the benefits of the 4" exhaust. Another expert tells me that I have a 3 1/2" catalytic converter and the addition of the 4" exhaust will give me more power and more torque. Now I live in a state that does not require smog controll checks. So I asked the above experts if I could remove the catalytic converter. The first expert tells me that the computer brain will search for the converter and give all kinds of nasty signals if it doesn't find it. The 2nd expert tells me that the brain doesn't monitor the catalytic converter and wouldn't know if it was there or not. He was a little wishy washy about his answer because of course it is a federal offence to mess with a catalytic converter - so I had to read between the lines. I would love to hear from more experts!

Expert #1 is full of it. Expert #2 is spot on, in fact, most powerstrokes do not have converters from the factory, so if it did manage to "disappear", it's unlikely it would even be noticed.

I bought this truck used here in the states - but it started its life cycle in Canada. I would be surprised if the wilds of Canada where this truck first roamed would require converters - but it has one none-the-less

It has more to do with when it was built than where.

Something else to consider is that not one single aftermarket exhaust company even offers a replacement converter in their systems. Just a 3.5 or 4" downpipe, followed by a 4" exhaust with a high flow, straight through type muffler.

Interesting. I was under the impression that due to Fed Government regulations that they had to leave the converter in place.

Not all of the gasoline powered rules apply to diesel powerplants.
