Replacing rear spring clamps.

I am currently restoring a 1974 F100. The rear leaf spring clamps that hold the springs together are pretty rusted out. I have sandblasted the springs and shackles and repainted them. I now have to get the clamps back around the front and back of the spring. The clamps seem to be the same ones that are on the current ford trucks. If I order new ones, how do I get them on and how hard is it to do correctly? Thanks for any input.

Replacing rear spring clamps.

Most of those clamps just bend around with a hammer and pliers very easily.

Torque1st is right! You might also want to get a big C clamp and mash the leafs hard together next to where you're putting the clamp. Then put the clamp on. That should give you a nice, tight fit.

I have found that on the early '70's trucks, one leaf (can't remember which one) likes to go askew to the sides. If you've got that, you can also use big C clamps to straighten them up before you reclamp them.

Yet another good idea before reclamping is to use a good, long lasting lube between the leafs. I like bicycle chain spray.

Replacing rear spring clamps.

Has anyone tried adding additional clamps for the purpose of reducing spring wind up on hard acceleration? When I added air bags I had to give up my Shure Track bars. I would like to get back to the drags strip to see what kind of time I can do but I am concerned about wrapping up the defferencial and spitting out the drive shaft or worse.

You should be able to get the clamps at a local spring shop.
