Hello all, this is my first post so I hope I am doing this right...but it usually takes me about 3 times to get something right. First I want to say thanks, I cant tell you how much I've learned and been able to fix with the information from this forum. I have half a dozen or so pre 80's ford trucks but a total of 12 all together. So I have my hands full. One thing I am working on right now is my '72 camper special 2wd. 390 stock other than intake and carb. The exhaust pipe comes into contact with the truck over bumps or when there is a load on. Someone already split the exhaust into to pipes that go out the back but did a pretty poor job. So, my question is: since I'm going to be in there changing the exhaust should I go to headers and if so does anybody know which ones fit and work the best?
If your CS is equipped with a sway bar btwn the radius arms, it need to be removed in order to use headers. Switch to the front-mounted sway bar from a 75-79 Dentside.
Then headers comes down to long tubes or shorties. The former are a pain to install. Shorties are waay easier... I went with Sanderson shorties because an FE isn't a high-revving engine. Torque is king on the streets.
Btw, does your 72 have auxiliary tanks? If so then ya need to do some homework on routing the dual exhaust.
Thanks, HIO Silver. It just has the factory behind the seat tank. I put a flatbed on it so it has room on the sides for the extra tanks. It doesn't have the sway bar either so changing to headers should be pretty straight forward. Think I will go with the shorties none the less. I have a '71 4x4 CS that doesn't have the sway bar but my '79 4x4 CS does have it behind the axle and long headers. I'm pretty green so it's good to get the clarification!
