I replaced the ip on my 7.3 and motor ran ok ,plowed driveway 3 times all ok , now very loud hammer type noise, and yet I can use truck to plow driveway and it works ok. at idle noise is really loud, if I hit the throttle, noise level drops, tried to adj ip timing by retarding it ,no difference just harder to start. I was wondering if leaning out or adjusting ip richer if it would make a difference? thanks

Do you have a dynamic timing light? If not, how are you sure you retarded the engine?
Back to the issue, from my experience, the engine will have more "diesel-y" clatter when it's advanced. But anything could be making a hammer noise. Try using a long heater hose against your ear and try to track down the origin of the noise. I recently had a similar knocking noise, and it ended up originating from my steering pump. Does the hammer noise disappear when you turn the steering wheel, or press the brakes, or engage the air conditioning, etc?
