Ok, Ive replaced one fuel pump and the front tank already. The truck ran good for a while and then the pump went out. I replaced both tank and pump and that was great for a while then the pump went out again. I returned that Carter pump and got another. That ran fine for a while then quit working. I switched to the rear tank and that pump went out. Im guessing something is blowing the pumps but I have no idea what it could be. The truck has a 4bbl in it and all the emissions stripped out. The wiring looks solid. Im ready to pull my hair out in clumps over this so before I ****** myself bald what am I missing?
- Check voltage at pumps.
- You have the 460 engine, do you have the hot fuel option? If so maybe the fuel recirculating system is plugged up and the pumps are overheating from running against a 'dead head', so to speak.
- You have a lot of debris in tank that's plugging up the 'sock' and killing the pump.
I went through this with the rear tank pump in my 87 (Carter (NAPA) pump. One didn't last 5 miles. 4 !@#$%^ pumps. Carter said there was nothing wrong with them... even when you plugged in direct ???? Installed an Airtex working fine for 3 years now (Knock on wood)
Also check selector switch, plug in to pump connections - there has to be a reason the plugs are available, ground wire to pumps (I ran a wire direct from the battery),pump relay.
Thanks for the tips, Ill check it out. I don't think there was a return fuel line but ill check. The front tank is new so I know the sock isn't getting dirty.

If you have the in tank electric pump, you are supposed to have a return line. You should have two connections at the tank(supply and return) and 6 connections on the switching valve(supply and return for both tanks and the engine). The return should come from a weird looking can thing up near the carb.
