Hey guys, Uni here. I've been kicking around this idea of using a IR camera and a dashboard display as a nighttime driving enhancer. Blah blah blah, long story short; turns out there are already people who make these things, however they are a bit expensive. This system detects and pictures heat, instead of light. If utilized properly could enhance night time driving.
There are lots of critters our where I live: deer, elk, moose, and bear. All of which would leave a pretty good dent in Stan. No one wants that. Plus Aside from that, I like technology.
I've been able to mess with both IR and NV in HMMWVs actually. The NV I got to do just in the HMMWV but the IR I got to do in Alabama on one of my 2 week drills while doing some night training and I was driving... a deuce in a half! We were driving through pastures and down back roads so we were using it for exactly what you want it for. The driver used NV and the passenger had the IR to warn the driver as driving with IR goggles is a bit unsafe lol.
Didn't one of the flagship Cadillacs have this system several years ago? The image was displayed on the windshield via a HUD. You could spot the cars that had it as the shield in the center of the wreath of the Caddy emblem in the grill was replaced with the sensor.

Now that gives me one of those mad scientist ideas. Do you know what years of those caddys came with that system?
It was a rare option and Iirc only available on the sts (I think that's the one? Top of the line models basically is my understanding) . Anyway it's rare to come across and you're not the first one to have that idea. Others have retrofitted the Cadillac system into other vehicles which I'm guessing only makes them that much harder to find. Having said that I did see a caddy rolling around the other day with the hole in the grille the other day. I haven't even seen one on the road in years.
Guys have had IR systems on their rigs for years. For collision avoidance purposes I've read mixed reviews. The displays can be distracting, which can be more dangerous than the threat you're trying to avoid. A good sized HUD may lessen the distraction, and prove itself more useful.
How much light are you putting out up front? I've avoided dozens of deer hits with lots of light, and horns that wake them out of their daze.

Sweet, knowing that at least I know what to keep my eyes out for. I agree, probably super hard to find!

A couple of the ones I have seen have had some nifty features and offered a "person and animal" recognition. I've just started scratching the surface for even finding what is available out there. Hopefully I can start finding some really good reviews soon. lol
I've got the standard head lights, and they do really well as far as legal lighting goes. I encounter way too many people traveling to and from to run any extra lights. Most critters I've nearly hit have been in turns and near draws while meeting someone. It's also not 1 or 2 deer a week. I can usually spot 10-15 deer a day on my commutes. Though I live in Idaho, I don't live in a wilderness with a population of total population of 2, so running a bunch of extra lights while driving up the hillside by people's houses and property isn't really an option unless I want to get shot at. I have considered rolling with a nice bright light bar and/or spot lights. I would much rather innovate though.
Read that whole thread and click the links and you'll know as much as I do. 5 year option on the deville and apparently can be made to work with hud or a regular screen. His price seems reasonable. Not sure how well it works. To me it seems great for hunting and stuff but real world 60 mph I can see it just being a distraction. My problem isn't not seeing deer that are standing in the road, it's usually not being able to react to deer that run in front of me or as I come around a corner and night vision wouldn't help that so much. Would be a fun toy though.

Awesome!!! Thank you!
I also didn't consider the factor of the vehicle moving at hwy speeds. If the processor is super slow, then the delay and lag time could be terrible.
I feel like a system like this would definitely need a good sized display.
Would this allow me to see through womens' clothing when they are crossing the street in front of me ?
No, but having the right lines and the confidence to deliver them will... trust me, I know By the way Unicorn, I searched for the caddy DTS within 400 miles around me on CL and not one showed up I'll keep looking though!
