If other's are following...my father bought a nice but 'used' 1996 EB Bronco. It looked like paint and carpet/leather would be needed, however I was able to restore both to almost brand new condition...
However, the steering wheel cover is sort of loose (you can twist it on the wheel) and battered to much to restore. The rest of the steering wheel (buttons, horn, plastic) are like new.
Is there a good stitch on cover for this or do you have to buy a complete steering wheel?
I covered my steering wheel about 3.5 years ago with a stich on
type that I got from PepBoys. $15? Was awhile ago.Anyway, looks great and covered up all the worn sections nicely.Mine is black but I do believe there were other colors to choose from.If you go this route, take your time and keep it 'TIGHT' while stiching it up.
I have considered removing the cover from my '92, which has the same type of problem you described. My mother is a seamstress and told me that if you can cut the original stitching away and keep the cover itself intact without tearing it too badly or cutting the leather/vinyl itself, you can then use the old cover as a pattern to cut out a new piece of leather or whatever type material you want to recover the wheel. I haven't tried it yet but the cover on mine is reaching the point where I will have to very soon. The idea crossed my mind that you could change the color or texture of the material to make the wheel custom covered to suit your own personal tastes. The only thing you will have to deal with is the upholstry thread and the restitching which has to be done very tight to avoid the same problem again down the road.
Anyone know if there is foam inside? the cover feels really loose, I would imagine cutting the stitches and bringing it to one of the many tack/leather shops here would be a quick deal...but I doubt they deal in foams.
If you remove the cover you will find a normal looking steering wheel underneath. That is what I originally did. However, I recently purchased a brand new OEM leather-covered wheel from Ebay for ~$60. It is still in the original Ford packaging and includes the cruise and horm buttons. The guy is selling them continuously and claims to have a large stock -- he would not say how many. Contact me directly for more info.
The leather-wrapped steering wheels have a notch in the rim at the 6:00 position for the seam in the leather. If you peel it, the notch will show. I prefer the NON-leather wheel because the rim is thicker and feels more solid. It also fits my hand better than the thinner wheel that SHOULD be in an '83.
