ford transit build n update

I know there is a 14 transit forum bit it's nearly abandoned it seems..here are some updates on our full buildout etc.
We built out our medium size transit almost three months ago and drove it from New England to Oregon where we have been living(in it).
We get about 16mpg and are nearing the 20k mark. Smooth sailing so far. It's not a Sprinter(I owned one for 9 years) which is good and bad.
Service has been painless and handling and operating is smooth for me and my lady. Pretty nimble in traffic too.

Thanks for the update--my E150 is 13 years old and when it comes to replacing it, I would look at the Transit as a possibility although the height is an issue with our 7' garage door clearance.

My E150 with 4.6 has averaged 16.01 mpg for 124k miles--its full lifetime--and I would hope the Transit would do a bit better. What drivetrain do you have, and how much weight are you carrying? Is it a full camper conversion for instance?

Thanks, and I do check out the big (and little) Transit forums from time to time as both of them are on my list.

hmm

George,

We drove it lots before I built it out and it never got more than 17 empty And being very conservative to break it in. It's the smaller v6 e150 and medium roof and length. Classic eh?it could stand less hp and still be fine but Merica you know. It's just taller and more refined than the E series vans. Went from an e250 right to this and it's a pretty big step up in most other areas. after the build out camper style using lots of ply etc mileage only changed 1 mpg or less. It's a gas hog. Love it though!

Do you have any pictures of it? I'm really starting to like the Transits; they're growing on me.

My first 2 big vans, a '73 Ford E200 Flatnose, and an '86 GMC 2500, were Turtle Top camper conversions so that's how I got started on vans. Next few were basic passenger conversions altho we will occasionally camp in them. If you get pics up anywhere, I'd be interested in seeing them for sure.

I bought a '96 Savana new in 1997 and remember how revolutionary the GM "toaster" vans were. So the new Transit is a huge departure. We could make do with a mini next time around as it's just my wife and me (no Cub/Boy scouts, etc.)

I'm also very interested in seeing how one might re-fit a bare Transit for almost any end use. Being a tradsman I like the body but am highly skeptical the engine or suspension would be to my personal liking.
