Hi everyone I don't post much on here, but my 74 f100 has had only one issue since i have had it. Its my daily driver and i don't have anything else wrong with it mechanically, but it likes to backfire when i want to hit the gas real hard. I narrowed it down to either timing belt, or maybe I need a tune up and new spark plugs. Any thoughts?
I just went and put a 454 into a friends truck and let them do the tuning it back fired every time they stomped the gas I suspected the very loud ticking noise until I realized they had been timing the motor to ~8 degrees and leaving the vacuum advance connected they retimed it still had the ticking still made an odd noise when you hit the clutch still slower than my f250 with a camper (not a shell) on it but no backfire
If your running a points system I would try changing the condenser. My 73 390 had an issue with back firing out of the exhaust. I changed the $5 condenser and has been perfect since then. If your not sure what it is take the distributor cap off, it looks like a AA battery. Very inexpensive and very easy to change.
