Maybe someone has encountered this problem before? I own a 95 4 x 4 xlt with a 351 cleveland with only 103k. Just recently I have notice a whirring noise coming from the front. This only happens when it is in gear and I am pressing on the gas. When I coast or press the gas in neutral I don't get the sound. Only when I am in gear going down the road. It sounds like gears meshing(not grinding) but hey I am no mechanic. I thought it was the transfer case at first but I checked the fluid and also realized the sound was coming to far from the front of the truck. I love my truck, it's my baby and I want to keep her in to her twilight years. and this is driving me nuts.
No. Just wondered if you really had a cleveland or not.
You said it sounds like the noise is too far forward to be the t-case. Does it sound too far forward to be the tranny too? If it only happens in gear and under power, I'd suspect something tranny related. What transmission do you have?
It's the automatice with overdrive. I check the Transmission fluid and it looked good. Meaning the fluid was at the right level and I didn't see any metal chips or anything like that.
can we assume the truck is locked in 2-hi? otherwise i'd say front ring and pinion. if so, check the pinion bearing for play. is that a push-button 4-hi engagement? just curious...
Have you checked the fluid level of the front differential? are the hubs locked in? manual hub locks or auto locks? A dry diff rotating will make a metallic whirring noise as described.
