Smile rearend clunk

hey guys,
is there a way for me to check my rear end and universal joint ? (backyard mechanic) last week i was getting this god awful screach out of the back.i put it up on jack stands and got under it. I couldn't see any gear oil leaking. i spun the wheel on the passenger side and got some scraping, but i couldn't get the drums off, so being in a time pinch, i took my van to a garage, they got the drums off,and said they were shot, (i guess 183 thousand miles is pretty good) so after two new drums and brake shoes, i was back on the road...................
now i get a loud clunk out of the back end when starting out down the road. i would like to be a little more informed before i go back to the garage, or rule out some things my self. any help would be appreciated. thanks, i'd really like to be able to do the brakes my self next time... rick

I find the easiest way to do it is place the vehicle ona flat surface. Apply the parking brake (if it is seized block the tires.) Place the vehicle in neutral. Reach under the vehicle and twist the drive shaft back and forth. Watch the U-joints, if they move a lot they are shot. If they are nice and tight they are good. While you are under there and if they are good, give them some grease until it oozes out of the cups. Any more questions and I will be glad to help. I've done my share of U-joints since I drive 1 tons trucks maxed out with stuff and towing. Good luck!
