I have a 2000 Expy 5.4 4x4. For the past month or so, the windshield wipers come on whenever they want to. Then about 3 weeks ago, the radio started to cut out when I wentfrom Park to Reverse. Then come back on in nuetral. Then go back out when I hit Drive. I also noticed today the my 4 x 4 light in the dash was blinking. Help guys.
All your problems are not necessarily related. Expys are known for involuntary wiper start-ups. Usually the problem is a bad multifunction switch (i.e., the switch that controls the wipers, turn signals, cruise, etc.) Ford had either a recall, or more likely, issued a SSM to dealers about this problem. This happened to me under warranty. Ford replaced the switch. Problem never resurfaced.
Yeah, the wiper switch had an inherent problem. My wiper switch was replaced several years ago under warranty too, but I think there was some sort of recall....check with your dealer.
About the radio cutting in and out, you'd better call a priest to help you with that one.
Wiper switch is a recall item, so try to get it addressed in that manner. Can't help you on radio, do you know a good exorcist?
Only thing I can think of, with engine off, radio on stick you hand up under the dash and wiggle every wire you can feel. If the radio acts up you have a loose connection and you have found it.
If not, I am at a loss.
Sounds like you need a new TRS (Transmission Range Sensor) and possibly a 4X4 lockout switch on the transfer case. Both of these can cause the problems you've described.
I've even seen some that the wipers wouldn't work unless the truck was in 4X4, caused by the 4X4 lockout switch..
Let me throw another one at ya.......It only does all the stuff I mentioned in my first post....when it rains. Electrical problem somewhere but where.
When I posted befire I drove to work in those conditions....no radio, 4 x 4 light blinking, wipers doin whatecer they wanted....and it poured down rain the previous night...I came out for lunch after lettin the truck sit in 80 - 90 degree heat....no problem @ all..
Ever get any water on the floor under the dash?
Windshield leaks can cause water to get into the GEM module/fuse box and cause problems.
Water can get sometimes get into the TRS too.

This is your problem, another common problem on Expedition, F150, even super duty. There is a service message on the correction of the water leak. You will need to remove the fuse box and inspect it for corrosion on the leads. In many cases replacement of the fusebox and or the Gem is needed if this has been a prolonged problem.
Other symtoms can be ABS light on and blower running after removing the key.
