howdy,
First post. Trying to help out a bud of mine.
He recently picked up a 2000 excursion. 130k on the 6.8. Very clean.
Helped him out the other day. Changed out the trans fluid and filter. Used a Wix filter (58968) and Amsoil fluid (Synthetic Multi-Vehicle SS AT).
We: dropped the pan
Bled the torque converter
purged the lines and cooler
Filled her back up with 17 quarts then did our best to get the level just right (this involved some spillage and sucking out through the dip stick and refilling and sucking back out and refilling) this went on for quite awhile so I'm not actually sure how much fluid is actually in it now. But as best as I can tell, when hot, the fluid level is correct on the dipstick. But its not a definite solid level line. Kinda hard to read it. Perhaps there was still run off in the dipstick tube that was giving me bogus readings.
He's telling me that the car now jumps between 1st and 2nd gear when accelerating slowly.
Thoughts???
could this be expected only when the fluid is...low?...high? both?
thanks
WELCOME to the world of XXX's Was the old fluid burnt ?? Take a cold reading as well as turning the stick a diff way if having trouble getting a clean read..
The old fluid was actually very clean. The previous owner had had the tranny flushed just around a year ago. Also, there were miss matched bolts and globbs of silicone on the transmission pan so I'm guessing someone had changed out the filter at some point. I'll check the level cold and see where it lies. Then check it warm. I'm thinking readings were off due to residual fluid still in the dip stick tube.
Mine has a hard shift between 1 and 2 when it gets warmed up if I am moving slowly (parking lot, etc). It has been this way since about 80K miles. I have been told by a Ford Tranny tech friend of mine that it is the 1-2 shift solenoid. Sometimes they get "sticky" or sometimes even the little spring breaks. It won't do any harm to the Ex, but it sure is annoying!
This might be your friends' problem. Also, it doesn't do it when I get on the gas a little and keep the pressures up in the tranny. Only going slow.
Thanks for the input. I've been busy doing some research and it does look like this is a common/known issue. Looks like we will end up getting a transgo shift kit and replacing the valve body and springs for the 1-2 shift. Haven't taken it apart yet but I'm guessing there are some broken springs or a stuck valve
