So I picked up an 84 Ford f250 with a 351w 5.8L a few weeks ago and it has been a nightmare. I have not addressed the smog issue but I did get it to not over heat so that's good. I still have the ticking sound in my engine and today as I was pulling into my place something happened where it go crazy loud! I mean loud. I don't feel like I lost power but i'm not sure because I didn't drive it much after. I had am old Ranchero and it got really loud when the muffler fell off, this was 10 times as loud. It sounds like spitting air and it does it at idle.
Doing some research I found it could be a cracked manifold gasket, or an exhaust leak, but I think its way to loud for that. Someone told me the engine could be blown, piston, rods, etc. Any thoughts as to what it could be. Its stressing me out, i can not afford a new engine. Help!
If it idles I doubt the engine has a serious problem, how ever I'm not sure just what got loud. You mention a ticking sound? And spiting air?
Exhaust leaks at the manifold can be very loud, so could a broken EGR pipe or ..
Spiting air might be a spark plug that came out or broken EGR pipe or exhaust broken/burned through at the manifold, or...
You are going to have to get your head and hands in there and do some up close research, I think. Feel for unusual air movement and listen (with a funnel and hose if necessary) to exactly where the noise is.
Can you smell exhaust under the hood? or raw gas? Have you examined all the fluids?

I didn't smell any more exhaust or gas then normal. I did change the spark plugs last week and one just spun, wouldn't come out or tighten which I was going to get a heli-coil for. I tried getting under their last night to see where is may be coming from but its so loud it hurts my ears so its tough. Now that its cold im going to go out there and see if I can shake some of the pipes to see if they are loose. Ill also recheck the fluid levels. I changed the oil last week to so I know there was some in there, for the past few days at least.
