Just bought 1st Explorer
Hello, I am new to the Explorer forems. My brother just bought a 1997 Explorer, XLT, 4x4, 4 door, 4.0 SHOV, Auto, Leather (all the gadgets but now Eddie Bauer Badge). It has 77,000 miles on it. Is there anything he should be aware of? I mean things that are notorious for going bad. The previous owner just put new tires on it and had the front diff. replaced. Other than that it seems to run fine. No leaks or visual blimishes. Drives smooth and shifts fine. Any heads up on problems or anthing is always appreiciated. Thanks guys, Levi

The two 4.0 engines are OHV and SOHC; which did you mean? The SOHC engine has an "owner notification" program involving the intake manifold o-rings and another for the cam guids and tensioners. If you have the SOHC engine, you'll want to check to see if those have been taken care of.
by '97, the OHV was pretty much bug free. Earlier versions had a minor problem with the intake manifold gaskets. If it's a well maintained OHV, you should get many (100K) miles out of it.

Sorry, It was the SHOC engine. It seems to run strong. The previous owner had the rack and pinon (spelling?) rebuilt. It seems to be a little tight, but I am not really sure. My brother is happy. I hope it holds up. Thanks for the info, Levi
