Lightbulb Dual exaust!

I have an '86 F150 4X4 shortbed flairside. I'd like to put dual exaust on it soon, prefferably true dual, but where I live I need to pass inspection and my FI 302 has a factory cat. Not to mention there is zippo room around the transfere case for that sides pipes. I wouldn't be totaly against a different muffler with two tips (out the sides not the back) Something that sounds good, nice at idle and when you get on it, but nothing too loud either. It's my daily driver and I don't want it to become unbareable and I need it to pass inspection every 2 years. Any tips on a good muffler or entire setup to use? Is true dual an option for me? Thanks.

Dual exaust!

Go to a muffler shop. They will be able to do it for a good price unless you must do it yourself. A cheapy way it to go to an autostore (Canadian tire here) and buy elbows and straights and tips, mufflers etc and do it in you garage with lots of clamps. I have been told flowmasters sound best on these trucks, and glasspacks dont. Do you want side pipes?

The muffler shop will do a good job and get you the sopund you want.

Dual exaust!

Stingray's right about the glasspacks, My uncle put them on his 89 f150 with the cat converter and they don't give you the "ballsy truck sound". If your looking to do it yourself, I've seen certain parts catalogs for truck parts out there that have "Catback" kits that will split after the cat converter and usually exit the rear under the bumper. I'd list them but the good folks at this site don't allow those catalogs' names to be shown. If you want, you could pm me and I'd hook you up with at least two vendors catalogs off the top of my head.

Although, like Stingray also said, a good muffler shop will hook you up with something for about $150 more than what it'd cost (or atleast that's what I found here in NE) to buy one of those kits to do it yourself. Also, a really good muffler shop will "dry fit" the mufflers while the vehicle is on the hoist and let you hear what they sound like before making them a permanant fixture under your vehicle.

Thanks for the tips. nzabka, I emailed you to see about those catalogs. PM is disabled.

I don't want sidepipes, but I don't want the tips to come out of the back, I'd rather they came out in front of or behind the rear wheels. I havn't decided yet. I'd rather just do it myself rather than pay someone to do what I can do. I'd like a true dual setup but I think the only way that will happen is with a trip to the muffler shop because pipes will have to be bent to clear the transfer case, plus I'd need two cats and all that. A cat back system is my best bet I guess. Most of these are cut to fit right? I don't think I'll ever find one with my truck listed in the application.

I sent you an email with a couple of links to where you can order catalogs with the setups I was talking about. The only cat back kits they sell all seem to come straight out the back. Maybe you could get an exhaust shop to bend these to exit behind the wheels on the side is the only thing I could think of to keep you legal for emissions. But, like stingray said, and it shouldn't cost you anything, go to an exhaust shop and see what your options are for your particular truck.
