Starting Big

Bought my first truck ever yesterday, a 2012 Super-Duty Lariat, turbo-diesel, dually with 7k miles.

Never even drove a pickup truck before, but I need this to haul a fifth-wheeler around the country this summer. Wish me luck.

My wife is afraid to drive the thing. Any suggestions?

Cool, I just looked at the specs on that unit! All I can say is WOW! That thing is huge! As a retired truck driver, I am pulling a 41 foot, and have to be careful of where I go, and what I get into! I do wish you luck, and will ecourage you to please get a little bit of instruction before just jumping in and bopping down the superslab! And get some practice maneuvering that 5er! Best to you and yours, and please dont think that I am being smartazz or anything. Just being concerned.

Find a big empty parking lot and practice - both of you. Plan on backing into parking spots, but don't plan on finding many that will fit a CCLB; I know I don't.

Once you get the 5th wheel start practicing all over again somewhere big enough to accommodate the truck and the rig, again, both of you. You wife may not want to drive it but you never know when she may have to - say you break a leg while on the road. You may not want to wait 8 weeks to move along.

Good advice from 99150 too. Congrats on a nice rig and fiver. Start slow, get used to it and don't be afraid to let people fly on by until you're comfortable. These things don't stop on a dime.

Thanks guys. I posted this question in another forum, but I'm going to post this here to because I'm a little concerned. I just looked underneath my vehicle and found some heavily rusted parts. I paid 50k for this car (with extended warranty) and am wondering if this is a deal breaker and I ought to return it. (I have until Monday night).
Please advise.

What I see looks like surface rust, but just between us, I drove out the door with a brand new '15 King Ranch for $59 sfter the factory incentives, etc. so $ 50 seems like a lot for used, even with only 7000 miles.

My 2013, brand new and ordered by me, arrived with surface rust on the drive shaft. I presume some of these parts sit in inventory until needed for an order on the assembly line. I was surprised at how much rust there was on a new vehicle but I spray my rig down with Fluid Film twice a year so didn't worry too much about it.

The White Whale is a beautiful name, and that's a beauty truck. With that beast, you''ll have the most problems around town, both towing and unloaded. Backing into parking spots is the best plan. Learn what off-tracking is and figure out how wide you need to take turns. My rig is a lot shorter, and I still swing pretty wide in the city.

Around here, most camping spots wouldn't fit that rig, so just make sure you book sites that are long enough.
