Tunanut's X

Hey folks, been lurking for a while and figured it was time to jump in with both feet. I ordered my X in Oct99, got one of the first V10's late Jan 2000. It's been my daily driver for the last 15 years and has provided outstanding service. Never thought of doing any mods other than brakes, as the stock one's suck if you're towing anything heavier than a bike rack. Anyway, a few months back I was bring my wife somewhere in the X and she said, "this truck smells like hunting season. It's time you get a new one." Well I've been married long enough to know how to strike when the Iron is hot, so I bought this as my DD.

But when I heard what was being offered for my X, I fell in love with it all over again. It's been the best truck I've ever owned and there was no way I was going to give it away and since it smells like hunting season, I've decided to make it a hunting truck and keep it.
This is her from back in her glory days, your basic stock X

She's in quite a bit rougher shape now and needs some love. I've change out the opaque headlights with some CFL/Projects, wow what a difference.

I've also Cerakoted the stock rims black and put on some 285 Destination M/T's. Really changed the look of the truck.

Now where to go from here?

I know I need the bigger mirrors that my wife wouldn't let me have when I ordered the truck.

I've got a tic, a small exhaust leak going on, and the system is going on 16 years old, so I've ordered the Banks Power pack system. Already spraying the PB on the bolts, hopefully make the job a tad easier.

She needs a paint job as much of the clearcoat is coming off the fender, roof and rear window. I'm considering Monstalining the truck in OD or ODmilspec(sans panties) over the green and either desert tan or black on the trim. I'll be doing the undercarriage and wheel hubs in black chassis saver. Any thoughts on doing this? Crazy? Thanks in advance for the tips, tricks, accolades and criticism.

Personally, I'd save the money from the paint re-do (just wax what ya got if it's going into the woods anyway), and do the V/B suspension mods. You'll fall in love AGAIN with the old girl! It'll be a whole new beast...

Glad you decided to keep the ole' girl instead of giving her away. She looks good. Besides having a woods truck, you also now have a backup vehicle in case one of you daily drivers go down.

Woods truck, leave the paint alone and make the suspension more user friendly as well as setting her up for hunting, she will still look pretty with miles on her.

Nice bluefin, what was the weight?

If I'm going to keep my X at my house, I'm going to have to paint it. Our HOA considers it "unsightly". The paint and materials will run me 7 to 8 hundred and it's work I feel comfortable doing.

I'm still a bit confused mod-code spring deal, is there a thread for dummy's to figure it out?

The X has been used every summer to trailer my boat up to the Gulf of Maine where me and my son enjoy a couple weeks of fishing. Here's a couple pics and a vid of that fish in my avatar.

I think he was 11 when he fought his first giant on standup gear. We lost it after about a 45 minute fight, but he has been hooked ever since.

How did you get your rear window wiper to lay in the middle like that?

they complain about a clearcoat flaked excursion but let you park a chebby there? Crazy HOA! Just kidding, impressive to still find an original owner of a 2000. Hope you can get it "restored" back to its former glory.

I've always been a ford guy, but GM did real good with that truck, it is a joy to drive. Don't think I'm going to try to bring the X back, going to move her forward. Maybe make the HOA regret ever sending me a letter. Maybe paint her with this....

About ready to get buzy on the undercarriage. Degreased and pressure washed down under the 16years of grime that had accumulated. I was surprised to see my front bumpstops were gone, rears were beat pretty bad, spring were shot. V and C codes from ats and banks headers/exhaust. Going to change out the bilsteins for Rancho 9000's while I'm under there. It's was great to see that I have virtually zero rust, but while I've got it torn apart, I'm going to probably spray the frame and undercarriage with Chassis Saver. For now, I'm just piling up the parts in the rear till they all come in and it warms up a bit. I'm open to thoughts on other items I should checkout/replace while I got her on the lift.

This is what my driveway looks like right now. The X is too clean to take out in this mess, so she'll stay parked till this nonsense weather is over with.

Tell your HOA to pound sand, by doing nothing - they used the term "unsightly."

adjective, unsightlier, unsightliest.
1. distasteful or unpleasant to look at:
an unsightly wound; unsightly disorder.

If you don't like it, don't look at it. Fascists.

It makes me wish I had an HOA just so I could torture them. I'd be "that" guy.

I don't let them bother me, but yes, they are fascist. I got 3 letters last week. A shutter had blown off my house during some weather a week ago and my flag on my mailbox was broken, and the X again. We have some ****'s on our covenant's committee. We will be moving in 4 yrs after our daughter graduates to a non HOA environment. I fixed the shutter and mailbox, they'll have to wait and see if I have any money left after doing the mechanical/mod work on the truck to see what kind of paint job I'll be doing. They can't call it unsightly when it's covered in snow. HAHA.

Well, if the HOA forces your hand I suggest you trade it for a perfect condition bright orange Pontiac Aztek. Only downside is that you'll throw up a little inside your mouth every time you look at your own driveway.
