428 Stroker break-in?
I'm expecting my 446FE, 428 stroker, shortly. I'll be running the same cam and valve train from my recently running 390. I'll install all of the valve train components in the same positions they were removed from. So, the cam will require little or no break-in.
However, the rotating assembly is all new parts.
I plan to install the motor on to my 69 rolling chassis with the tranny. The truck will have no body, steering or tranny linkage etc. I'd like to test run the engine with just the headers, as I don't want to run the exhaust plumbing until I get the body back on.
Is this a bad way to break in a a new rotating assembly? What RPM range and for what amount of time should I run it? Should I engage the tranny and leave the drive-shaft disconnected or engage the entire drive-line to get more of a load by lifting the rear axle? (The latter sounds a bit dangerous :-)
Thanks,
All help appreciated. I'm ready to here this beast rumble, but I'd like for it to last longer than it takes for me to pay off the credit card :-)
One thing I think of is that with open headers you won't be able to hear if the engine is making any bad sounds or not, though if everything is right it shouldn't.
The only thing that really needs broken in other than cam is the rings, and you won't be able to do that until you can drive the truck.

Do you reccomend 30W oil for the first runs?
Just got my FPA headers, they look great! see the FPA/STANS thread for some pics.
Now, if Flatlander would just get me the shortblock. It's been 3 months since I ordered it :-(
I've got a full complement of gaskets, and I'm ready to hear this rascal.
I'll be sure to get some quality video/audio of it's first runs.
