Well during my inspection to locate a slight driveline vibe I came across a crack in the exhaust tubing just before the stock muffler. It needs to be repaired as it is about 75% around the tube. While prepping the area to be welded I found that the weld at the back of the muffler itself is completely broken, so the muffler and tailpipe are technically not connected. This is on a V10 btw...
While I would prefer a repair over a new muffler it doesn't make sense to repair at this point. SO now I have to decide on a muffler, and based on my research there are lots of opinions on what to go with.
After hours of Google searching different muffler videos to get an idea on the tone I think I am more confused than when I started. Straight pipe it...Flowmaster 40 series, or 50 series, or 70 series, Aero Turbine, the list goes on and on as you all know. I will be replacing muffler only, no full catback etc.
I would like a good deep tone, don't want it to be excessively loud, and really want to avoid the common "drone" I have heard so much about. This is the family hauler, takes kids to daycare and tows on occasion.
Sucks we cant get this engine to sound like a V8 but oh well...
When the rear weld on mine broke, I looked a lots of mufflers, listened to hundreds of clips and in the end I put the Gibson catback on mine, it's a V10. No drone, nice tone. It's gets a bit raspy at full throttle but it is a glass pack. I tow a trailer and did not want the constant drone, it does me good. As to the FM's, we call them DroneMasters for a reason. This video was done at install. It has mellowed a bit since then and I trimmed the pipe a bit and that change the sound a tad.
I put a 80 series flowmaster on my V10 and i dont notice the drone. At high RPMs it sounds like a lambo, now what i was expecting, but i really like it.
On my previous EX, I went with a 70 series Flowmaster... I had the shop install everything they had and at the end I liked the mellow tone of the 70. It's not much louder than the stocker just a touch deeper. Just my .02
I have a walker dynomax super turbo on mine. Just added the muffler and custom y-pipe. It sounds great and mild. Haven't had any drone. I've had it on during towing, city and highway driving for over a year now.
Wife did not want something loud and she's happy but it does have a bit of throat to it.
It got slightly louder after about a month to the point where I am happy now more than on install.
