Fender insulation

I was driving home today and kept noticing more engine noise from the left front of the driver door than I ever had with my first X. I got home, opened the hood, and then open the driver's door. I could see all the way through to the hood and could see the headlights shining. I put a piece of the knock off Dynamat--frost king duct insulation above the top hinge of the door level just into the fender, and it made a tremendous difference. Below the height of the top hinge was this pathetic attempt at a piece of insulation or whatever-narrow black strip which was open on both sides. Be that as it may I left that open. I'm sure there's some air flow issue or water issue I don't know about. The passenger front door was the exactly the same. Does anyone know if that is the ways its supposed to be or have I just found a new project?
