Hey guys, looking into getting this era 7.3, and once I do an exhuast and an intake, i'm wondering how a higher miles truck will handle a chip? (250,000-300,000) miles. Am I just asking for trouble?
To the OP, you will be fine. These are pretty tough engines. With decent maintenance, I've seen them go over 500,000 miles with no problems and still have good compression. You're on the right track though getting everything up to snuff first. Definitely want to have everything working and running right before throwing any power mods at it.
my only other suggestion if you're worried is this. Take the truck to a reputable diesel mechanic and have them do a once over on the truck. A good mech who know's their powerstroke motor can hear things you and I may not necessarily hear. They can do an injector buzz test (or you can if you have the scan tool...IIRC that's how it's done) and you'll know what kind of shape things are in.
I mean as the others have stated you're probably ok as is but it might not be a bad idea to have the "doctor" sign off on your trucks health before you go in for a 'performance enhancing surgery'...LOL
