H pipes, crossover pipes, X pipes!

I have never understood the reason for these. Can someone tell me please?

Why ''H'' pipe?

A V-8 engine with a standard 2-plane crank has an inherent imbalance in the exhaust pulses. They are not evenly timed in each manifold/header. A crossover of whatever type acts as a balance tube and allows the pulses to even out in the mufflers and tailpipes

Why ''H'' pipe?

i just had my truck fitted with crossover and flowys.i used the stock 02 and it's y pipe and just ran duals from left and right of motor .my question is why now does she not seem to have that take off like she did when i had had left and right pipes from headers y into one then y into dual mufflers.do i loose low end tourque or whats up ?????????.
by the way a crossover really really makes a diference in the exit sound is very equal. i like.

You may have lost initial take off due to the lack in torque that the engine is producing at low rpms. See, engines need some back pressure to create torque. Opening up an exhaust system is going to allow the engine to breath better and is beneficial at higher rpms, thus reducing the backpressure. Now, before someone jumps in here, backpressure does not creat torque, but it is a factor in it.

forddy,

what size engine and pipe are you running? Maybe I can help out with that, but dual 2.5" pipe are usually too much for anything but a 400 or bigger.

Let me know and maybe I can shed some light on what to do.

You guys getting any rain up there?
