Fuel pump and slow start question...

How's it going? I have a 2000 F150 with about 140,000 on it. That being said, lately I have noticed it taking a considerable amount of time to start. It runs perfect no problems there, just maybe 5-6 seconds longer to start than normal. Now, I have also noticed a new noise coming from underneath a distinct whining. Is this the fuel pump? Would this cause my hard start problem? If so any recomendations on a replacement and how difficult of a job is this? It's never had the plugs or coil packs(?) replaced think that may be it? I have heard they are not cheap. It is my work truck and would like to catch something before it leaves me stranded. Thanks for any help.

Jimmy

Fuel pump and slow start question...

Sounds like you need a new battery and a new fuel pump.

You should also give the truck a tune-up..i.e...plugs, wires, distributor cap, clean the injectors (not that gas tank additive crap). 140K is a long way past the time you should have done this.

Fuel pump and slow start question...

I know the battery is ok, it's not turning over slow just taking awhile to fire up. I've been told they really don't have plug wires just some coil packs and they are about 70 bucks apiece times 8. Any ideas on a good place for a fuel pump? Thanks,

Jimmy

Fuel pump and slow start question...

Hi nova65ss and welcome to FTE
I would for sure start with a set of plugs. Unless you have a definate misfire I wouldnt change the coil packs.
Make sure you get a genuine Ford fuel pump. The aftermarket ones I've seen arent worth buying.

Fuel pump and slow start question...

Thanks Dave. Are plug replacements on these thing doable myself? Or is it worth taking it to have someone else do it? When replacing the pump is there an easy way to get the presuure off the line? I take by the way it sounds it's an inline pump? Thank you,

Jimmy

If you're quite mechanically inclined you can replace the plugs yourself. At the top of the forum is a thread with instructions and tips for doing them. Lots of guys have here have changed them now with success but be prepared to have lots of time and tools on hand.
To get rid of the fuel pressure the easiest way is to unplug the inertia switch which is behind the passenger's kick panel and then start the truck til it runs out of gas.
The fuel pump is in the tank. You have to drop the tank to replace it
Drive the truck until is is pretty much out of gas before doing it.
I still think you should replace the plugs and fuel filter before you worry about the pump though. Try that first.
