I have just purchased a used 2000 Excursion V-10. And have looked for the axle code just behind the drivers door. But there is no entry under the "axle" area. Any ideas??
Look at the tag on the rear differential cover.
The second line should be what starts with the gear ratio. For Example if it was a 3.73 open diff the second line would start 3 73. If you had a limited slip it would start 3 L 73. Or, 4 30 for open 4.30s or 4 L 30 for limited slip 4.30s.
Just FYI, sometimes the first number is covered up by the diff cover bolt so you might just see a L 30 for example.
I pull a 28' TT about 6000 pounds. Mostly through the Ozark hills in Southern Missouri. And this is also my daily driver. What ratio would be best and why?
If all you pull is 6K#, the 3.73 would be best simply for the MPG. 6K# is next to nothing for the X. I pull just over 5K pounds of car trailer and hardly feel it back there with my 6.8L V10 and 3.73 gear.
