I've heard for some time there was a problem with some of the 99 7.3 powerstroke diesels. I had a 2002 7.3 that was bulletproof. I've found an F250 that I would love to have.

The only 'problem' that I am aware of on the early 99 models is related to the torque convertor....sometime rattles and noisy. Other than that, they are just as reliable and capable as the other models. Ford updated the engines in 99.5 but that doesn't mean there was anything 'wrong' with the previous engine. Here is a publication from Ford that details the updates.
Is it an e99 or 99.5? As Shake-N-Bake stated there are some differences between the two but there is nothing that would make me run away from one that has been taken care of as long as the money was right.
