I found a 79 4x4 f350 dually can any one tell me what rear was used in the truck I know the front is a dana 60 that is a plus I am trying to find out info on the back rear so I can see if its worth buying it for the rears and cab here is what I am doing I am building a 79 f150 4x4 I want to do a dana 60 a swap on it and junk the 9in and the dana 44
I bet there is a raised 60 or 70 on the back side of the pumpkin webbing? I'd guess D60 or D70 axle.
Do not "junk" that 9" and D44, some people need those parts, Craigslist them.
You know that front D60 will have flat leaf spring perches welded to the top of the axle and your current front D44 is wedge mounted. Meaning clamped to the front of your radius arms.
May dana 44 is coil spring the dana 60 If I remember right has leaf springs which I want to use if I use the rears from the f350 the springs and all will be used I am going to sell them or trade for the rears I want but then again I may justed junk the dually rear because ford told me in 79 they did not make a f350 dually in 4x4 and that it could be one of 3 rears dana 60 or a dana 80 or the 10.25 ford never used the dana 70 dodge and chevy did and the dana 80 was used in the f450 in 99 and 86-99 used the 10.25 in the f350 the dana 60 was used in 75-79 f250 and f350 but not as a dually I am starting to think it may be a 10.25 but do not know how to tell I know the dana's have there stamp what about the 10.25
When the snow stops I am going to look at it more its at the in laws house I had someone that wanted to buy the frame and rears but I know the front is a 60 the back I am not sure on if I can make it a non dually rear then I can use it if not I am not I am not buying it but is there any way to tell if its a 10.25 with out opening the rear
Pretty sure ford had a D70 rear option. Factory dual rear wheel 2wd. Shows options in the owner's manual, service manual, and spec sheets. I am sure somebody (Numbers?) will correct this soon enough.
Yeah maybe be 2wd but ford and my dad that worked for ford for 40 years was telling me that they never used a dually with the 4wd in till the early 80s wish it would let me post the info from dana about the rears I found
Well, a few ways to tell. Sterlings seem to have out board drums, and dana 60s in these years didn't. If it is a rear 60 then X2 on the casting in the web. Look at the cover. Compare it to the front. They should look the same if both are 60s. Fronts have a much higher fill plug, but the cover will interchange. Is there a tag on the bolts still? Not guaranteed right, but worth a look. Another way you might tell without a tear down is the yoke, original has a 1330 and I believe the bigger sterlings had 1350s or 1410s.
Dana 60 has a 10 bolt cover and justed like all dana's has the number casted in to the housing and I was told a few mins ago I do not know if this is right or not but was told the 10.25 has a 12 bolt cover I know the rear is a 8 lug and that's all I know on it try to find out so I can look at what it would cost yo change it to a single wheel or would it be better to find a dana 60 set the way I want it
F.Y.I. Not all dana axles have the number cast on them. You need the B.O.M. Number stamped in the axle tube to be sure. Neither my front dana 60 or my old dana 44 had a cast 44 or 60 in them.

1979 F350 4WD: Dana 60's front and rear. Dana 70's were used on 1961/78 F350's and 1979 F350 2WD's.
