Hi all, I have a 2000 Ranger XLT 4WD 3.0 extended cab. The VIN calls out 4 wheel ABS but I have drums on the rear and don't see any sensor wires on them. I have disc on the front and see the wires. Am I understanding it correctly, ABS on all 4 wheels? Or is it something else? I plan on replacing front wheel hubs and I have to choose. No pulse hubs
Thanks
It's 4WABS, the speed sensor mounted atop the rear differential is the rear ABS speed sensor for both rear wheels.
The speed-o, auto tranny & cruise control also use the rear ABS speed sensor PID output to do their thing.
If when you raise the hood & look over & down from the drivers side, at the inner fender, in front of the brake master cyl, you'll see the ABS motor & abs brake line manifold & will see 4 lines coming out of it.
Although it's technically 4WABS, there are only three speed sensors, with the one on the rear differential doing duty for both rear wheels. With this arrangement, it's quite possible for one rear wheel to lock up and get no ABS action.
Really there are 4s/3m systems too. if not both, but one rear wheel locks it decreases rear brake pressure till both the rear wheels unlock. For exmple - Mercrdes Atego Truck.
Really it is possible to fit 4s/4m ABS to Ranger. To do it u need 4s/4m ABS unit and u need to add two tone rings on axle shafts and weld WSS sensors holders.
Of course u need to rewire and to run one more brake line to rear axle.
ABS unit sends speed data by CAN so speedo will work)
