Battery problem/question

'02 F250 XLT with 5.4L. For several months my battery would intermittently crank the truck but not start it. Sometimes, it would start, almost get 1,000 RPMs, then die. Then I'd run the battery dead trying to get it started. I recently took the truck to Advance, where the battery tested bad with only 490 amps. A new battery has apparently solved the problem.

Can the battery have enough volts to crank the starter normally but not enough amps to operate various sensors/systems so the truck will start?

As the battery begins to provide starting current, voltage begins to drop. so if you have 1000CCA's the start process will last longer than a batttery with 800CCA's before the battery voltage begins to drop.

the longer the start process takes...the deeper your battery is discharged...the shorter the battery life.

as the engine starts to spin, the alternator begins to add amps to the circut and helps the spin up process.

if you find short battery life is at play here...have your alternator tested at low RPMs.
