87 Ford F150 300 6 timing gears etc help.

Hello everyone it's been awhile snice I been on here. I'm working on a 87 Ford F150 300 stright six The timing gear went out when the old guy was driving it at 55mph.I was able to remove the cam sprocket it was a little pain in the A%% but got it. The crank gear was easy it was OEM with 123K.He bought a new water pump to have put on and he bought the same timing gear set up fiber cam gear steel crank gear. Anyone know a trick to get the cam gear on? I already thought of making a bolt nut press but I have read some where or heard of people heating it up in the oven and it slides right on,That would be alot easier. Also what about getting the cam back in time? It's hard to tell how many time itwas turned out and the crank also. I got piston at TDC by removing the plug but the cam (way out of time) I can turn and put the rotor button on #1 on distruber but doesn't that mean I could be 180 Degrees in or 180 degrees out. I have one person telling me you have to remove the valve cover etc. And a friend of mine that been a mechanic for over 28 years telling me to point the rotor button on #1 I will be fine both valves will be closed. Also is the thread gauge on the cam 7/16 course tread. Any help putting cam back in time?

thanks before hand

As far as getting the gears in time, there should be a big dot like(a small drill bit like hole not very deep) mark on each gear. just line up the marks before you push the gears together.

As far as installing the cam gear, there is a special tool to push it on. Maybe you can rent one.

Today got the gear lined up everything in time. I wanted to do a test start before installing everything and not being right and waste the gaskets. I knew I was i right the money I did timing gear many times the rotor button was dead on #1 checked on the cap and #1 piston was up. I turned her over by hand a few time and double checked everything. I installed the harmonic balancer and give a test start it turned over once and started it had a lifter tick. But I knew I was right one it started so easy I say the lifter tick was from sitting and him tiring to start it with the oil pump not pumping snice the cam gear was shot. I hope any way find out tomorrow.
