I have a engine and transmission out of a '88 Lincoln Town car that I'm planning on putting in my '76 F-100 Long wheel base pickup, and am wondering what the physical difference between the transmission currently in the truck (C4/C5??) and the AOD out of the Town Car. Will anything have to be changed on the crossmember, driveshaft, etc ? Thanks!
The AOD is a little longer, you may have to move the crossmember back a little. The drive shaft yoke will fit but the driveshaft will have to be shorteded.
I talked to a guy that had put an AOD and 302 engine from say, a '90 Grand Marquis into a '67 F-100 and he said that everything went in smoothly, that is, as long as the vehicle came originally with a C-6. He stated that the C-6 and the AOD are the same length and bolt right up. I looked under my truck last night and I have the C-5 or C-4, and not the C-6. The large crossmember that the transmission sits on bolts to the framerails and there are holes predrilled for the crossmember to move forwards or backwards depending on which tranny comes in the truck. He also said that if the C6 comes in the truck you have to do nothing to the driveshaft. Don't hold me too this, but the guy does alot with vehicles on a daily basis. I will be able to document this once I do the swap.
Correct. Driveshaft length will be close. You should be able to find a slip yoke that will fit the driveshaft then check length. Make sure the yoke doesn't bottom in the transmission, maybe as much as an inch cleareance when the vehicle is on the ground.
The linkage/tv cable/shift linkage (whatever the technical name is) will definitely have to be changed/modified, but I was mainly worried about the mounting of the tranny in the truck and the driveshaft length.
Javi2001, check your specs on the AOD vs. C4 or C5 or C6. I'm pretty sure the AOD is LONGER than the C4 or C5, and it is the same length as the C6. RCLARKE is saying the AOD and the C6 length is the same, and I'm going to have to go with him on that one.
I don't have any pics I could post online to show you what each kind looks like. One of the best investments you could make for your truck and your own knowlege is buying a Hayne's manual. It will have the pictures of the different kind of tranny's in it. Sometimes you can find a nice Haynes on ebay for less than what'd cost at a parts store, but they're generally under $20. I think I payed around $15.
