Heading it off to the scrap yard might be the easier and best way to be done with this one---I'm facing potentially the same situation.
'99 Volvo S80 with turbo bought in May 2014 recently developed hard starting issues when cold outside. DTC's point to a failed spendy "module" that may or may not fix the problem or be part of a larger failure. Also discovered the problem could be as "simple" as a leaking heater core but farmed out that's over $1,100----as a guesstimate.
Paid $800 for it, $400 in brakes and $90 for two new tires----time to say bye bye if it can't be fixed for $250 or less.
It'll bring almost $400 from the scrap yard.........

some of the volvo modules have been resoldered to fix them... Someone I know had a '98 V70 that he got for $300 with so many DTC's that a standard reader could not read, and it also did not run right. a single box had failed solder and after soldering it back the car ran fine for years till it spun a bearing at over 200k miles

That's entirely possible but honestly even if the current issues can be "easily" fixed what else will crop up in the near future? Will they be as troublesome, potentially expensive to repair or nearly impossible to diagnose?
Its a nice car for the original money spent but after the shock of learning too much about the uber-complex auto dimming inside rear view mirror and how expensive that could be I pretty much wrote it off as being more than I want to deal with.
Some times we just have to throw in the towel and call the wrecker...... I might put it on Craig's List as a fixer upper but dealing with those morons makes the scrap yard seem like such a better idea.
Posted to craigslist. Let the scammers try. Going to give it week whole and see if I get any bites. SE Kansas is a poor rural area. I am sure I can sell the battery and tires quickly. The rest may take time.
Probably go look at some newer Expeditions this weekend. I liked the van, but have doors all around will be nice for the larger kids. Plus they have alot of nice things that are not available on the vans.
Still don't know what happened. The engine gave no warning of impending doom.
That is not a bad idea.......IF Tranny fits......You will need the 5.4 Engine harness AND PCM ..... Since you have a v10 and 5.4 is a v8...It will Absolutley fit...with room to spare....Do you have the E4OD or the 4R100 ?
A sister Van would be Ideal ..BUT can you store it while you strip it ? You need to hear the Engine run IMHO...after that it is simple....If you have the tools....Also you need the VAN 5.4 not the F Series 5.4.......they are NOT interchangeable...The E series has 2 Valves where the F series can have 3 exhaust Valves ....Take the cover off to check.....
After looking at the van in the pics, I'd have a hard time scrapping it. I'd probably try to find a used engine.
That is one very nice looking van to be sure. While I do understand OP's desire to not dump a bunch of time or money into making it run again would it work offering it to a larger salvage yard that also buys/sells used vehicles as DIY repairable?
I actually started working on pulling the engine. Will have to come out the front as I don't have the means to lift the body. Radiator out, intake, injectors, fuel rail off.
I do have the storage for another van. 4 acres in the country. No codes to violate.
Looks to me that I would need the van 5.4, the injector harness, the PCM?, and so little things to switch it.
