Question: does anyone know the complete part number for the airbag diagnostic module for a 95 F150? I found it on the ford part website as 14B056, but it is missing the four letters/numbers in front and the two letters at the end of the part number. Ford sells the part for $250 but I have found it on ebay (something with the 14B056 in it) but I want to make sure I have the right part before buying. I also found 4 modules on MyAirbags.com but they all have different numbers/letters before and after.
Background: I have a 95 F150 which has a SRS airbag code 51 blinking. Also, fuse 18 blows when I start the truck (controls speedometer and SRS airbag) and after I start it, I hear a 5 beeps x 5 times beep code which I think I have found to mean that something is wrong with my airbag light (which is confusing because the airbag warning light blinks with code 51). I disconnected the airbag diagnostic module (I see that the thermal fuse is blown and the plastic cover is all melted). The resistor within reads ~40 ohms. The fuse doesn't have continuity, and I also check one end of the fuse to one end of the resistor and get continuity there. That can't be right. I found another thread on this forum that says to check the varistor and mine reads 1.5ohms, so bad. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...ol-module.html
When I have the module connected and have a bad fuse in #18, I read a .2A drain to the battery. When I have the module connected and have a good fuse in for #18, I read a .3A drain to the battery. When I disconnect the module, it goes down to .09A and I've concluded that is going to the radio, fuse 1 in the engine, I assume for radio memory. When I start the truck with the module disconnected, the airbag light holds steady (no blinking) and the beeping sound is gone. Anyway, I think I just need to replace the module, but want to make sure I have the right part number. Thanks for any help!
If the thermal fuse is melted then you have another problem that needs fixed BEFORE replacing the module. That resistor (the one under the thermal fuse) is used to melt the fuse. When the module detects a problem that could cause accidental firing of the airbag, it sends current to that resistor. The resistor gets hot and destroys the thermal fuse above it which if i remember right opens the airbag firing circuit. It's a self-destruct feature of the module, but you can replace the fuse and be all good again AFTER fixing whatever problem caused the module to blow the fuse in the first place.
Here's a writeup for another Ford vehicle but I imagine the procedure is the same:
Thanks. Well, I'm not sure where to start next to figure out what caused the thermal fuse to burn out. In the meantime, I'm wondering if it is ok to drive the truck without the module installed.
