Front coil spring install..

Well I'm looking to bringhe truck up to its stock ride height... Right now if I jack the front up.. Both strings fall out..(PO cut a few coils off).. Question ..How do I get the new springs in? Do I use a spring compressor? Or do I have to break the knuckle loose?

Any help would be appreciate..Thank you

I'm a newbie to slicks but I have considerable experience restoring/building classics. Using spring compressors can be extremely dangerous so be careful if you go that route. Also I have never seen coil springs that didnt have some sort of retainer to keep them in place. Springs that will fall out on full suspension travel does not seem safe to me. Im sure one of the more experienced guys on here will chime in.

springs

The po must have taken the j brackets off the axles. They keep the axle from dropping to far down. To put the new spring in with the weight on the sup. take the nut off the top of the shocks. When you lift the truck the axles should drop enough to get the springs in. Just watch the rubber brake lines you don't wont to put them in a bind. Make sure the spring is seated properly then let the truck down. You must feed shock rod back into the mounting hole. Good luck

Got it done a few days ago... Did exactly as you recommended... Loosened the shocks and pushed litely on the suspension and springs went right in...tightened the upper spring retainer , lowered the car tightened shocks and lower retainer.. 20 minutes start to finish...

Also want to note so others don't get confused..I don't believe the J hooks were used on 1966... I believe they switched to the upper retainer...

Thanks for taking the time..
