Hey guys the motor in my truck ( 1990 F150 ) currently has 310k on it and it has lived a very hard life on the farm behind a T18 pulling everything and anything it could. She is starting to suffer from low oil pressure, I have a 91 parts truck also with a 6 that I am going to build up to throw in the old girl. By build up I don't mean shoot for the moon and expect unrealistic figures from this old engine, I'm simply looking for a little more umph. So far I have the parts motor almost stripped down. I'm not going to remove the crank as the motor only had 130k on it. My plan is to re ring it, instal a HPOP,port the head, roller rockers, a mild 260 cam, lap the valves and just clean her up maybe paint if I feel ambitious enough. My question is does anybody have any other input to try for ignition, and injectors? Also any do's and dont's? Biggest thing I'm concerned about is the egr I busted it off during strip down, Is it needed or not? Any input would be appreciated except negativity i don't need that crap!
You might look into converting to a carb, that's the easiest way to get large gains out of these without custom MAF and computer stuff. The EGR isn't a big deal as long as it's plugged properly to stop leaks. Looking forward to seeing results.
Just do a stock rebuild, the HPOP is only good if you're turning a LOT of RPM's, (Which the engine isn't gonna do)....
Just a stock rebuild, true all the surfaces up, and bump the timing up from 10* BTDC to say 12-13* and call it a day.
Cheap, simple and without a ton of machine costs, and extra parts, you've accomplished about the same goal.
Porting the head won't hurt, but as others have said, since it's a SD driven engine, it won't recognize the extra airflow (Speed Density uses a set of base parameters, and the MAP Sensor is the biggest reflection of how the engine is running in the eyes of the ECM).
I have heard installing 302 injectors can help if you port the engine, but I have also heard essentially they are the same because 6's run at 60psi fuel pressure and V8's runt at 45psi.

Until you reflash the ECU and tell it how much air is actually flowing, porting it will do jack**** as for the entire system actually recognizing the gains and effectively using them as an advantage.
You get into that, you'll get into needing a tuner (twEECer, Moates, etc) and it's extra cost for nothing really if you're not looking to pull better 1/4 miles times, etc.
Just trying to save you some money and disappointment. Your biggest gains will be what i said and re-gearing the rearend to maximize the torque to your uses.
