Hey Guy's
I have a old fixer upper I just bought, a 1991 F150 5.8 EFI E4OD. Along with other repairs the transmission is in limp mode (only 1st and 3ed gear) and the OD light on the dash stay's on. Is that a indication the MLPS-selector switch is bad? I don't see a check engine light yet so I haven't check for codes. thanks!
when the light remains on (for the 92-97 anyway) this means your trans isn't getting power.pop the hood and check the trans relay.
If the EEC Power relay was not powering the red wire 361 to the transmission then the EEC Computer would not have any power either.
You would have a no start condition.
It means the EEC Computer has a problem with the E4OD.
You need to see what codes you have in KOEO and CM to find out why the Computer is turning on the light (lamp).
Hey, planning to replace the MLPS this week. In the mean time I've been reading other post and thought I'd mention also. My tach isn't working properly either. When I turn on the key it jumps to 4K and stays there, even with the engine running and then returns to 0 when I turn the key off. Could this be part of the shifting problem also? thanks!
I think you have more than one problem here. The OD light staying on is probably a wire shorted out in the shifter or column somewhere. Ford programming is to flash the OD light when there is a transmission issue, not keep it on continuously.
The shifting problems you have are probably another thing entirely. Check for codes and report back!
Ok Guy's. I need some help with this. Tried to read codes last night, no luck. Either my buddy's code scanner not working correctly or something else. Didn't see anything on a transmission code. Do I need a different code reader for trans codes or are they also stored in the CM?
Here's something to think about. The previous owner say's he didn't have any problem with the trans shifting before the engine quit. I found the computer board had a burn area on the board so I purchased one from Advance Auto online. They had at least 10 listed and said all of them would work on my application. I don't understand that. And the description didn't mention E4OD. Could it be that I received one for a C6 therefor my OD light is staying on because it's not getting a signal from the CM? I'm interested in you guy's opinion. I know there's a lot of experience on this website. thanks
Yes, having the the wrong PCM for your truck, would give you problems. Look at the driver side door, frame and post the Calibration alpha-numeric code here.
You need to find out what PCM you need to work correctly with your engine and trans.

No the Transmission codes are also stored in the PCM computers memory (CM).
I do not know what he had for a code reader so I can not tell you if you need a different one.

The CM does not send out signals. It is where on the road codes are stored.

He is talking about the "0-98A-R05" in the example below.
