I think any unit will work. It depends on which style you have, integrated or not. My issue is two fold. The integrated stereo crapped out and the aftermarket won't wire up correctly because of some issue with the Cam bus so I have it wired up in a rigged fashion. Plus one of my speakers is cutting out. I'm pissed still and its been two years.

I have a 2012 FX4 and what a nightmare it has been for me to get my stock radio back. Loud pop came from back seat, so loud I thought I got hit from the rear minus the impact. Anyway, radio goes out and time on screen starts flashing. I pull over and restart the car and everything is normal again. Two weeks later same thing, only not as loud. Time flashes after a not so loud pop, but this time after I restart the truck, no radio.. Time just flashes. Radio comes back one more time for a day or two, but then goes out for good. Truck has 90K plus with a basic extended warranty, but of course factory head unit is not covered. I think about going aftermarket as I wanted a navigation, but I really like to keep things stock and the Iphone is better anyway. Make an appointment at stealership for unrelated issue and inquire about headunit, service advisor really no help other than telling me it "might get expensive if we have to go poking around testing wires." I then go on ebay and find exact headunit to the letter partwise , which is important if you want to keep everything the same as before (steering wheel controls, 6CD changer, etc.) I put in the new head unit costing $225, and ride around for a day and a half and what do you know POP again... Time flashes and here we go again.. Next day another pop and 2nd headunit blown. For whatever reason I never checked rear speakers. I know I should have and if I did I would have saved a couple hundred bucks. I took the truck to radio shop and the tech confirmed that rear speakers were blown. Speakers blew out two head units. I never thought speakers could do that but obviously they can. Found a 3rd head unit on ebay for 99 bucks minus the 6CD changer, bought 4 decent Pioneer speakers from Amazon and now hopefully I'm back in business. Sorry for the long post but do yourself a favor and get those cheap 8 dollar Ford factory speakers out of your truck as soon as possible. Can't believe Ford would do that. I know they have to go cheap on some of their parts but this is really unacceptable on their part. Hope this can help someone out..... I still love the truck and ecoboost is still awesome at 94,000.....

What type of radio did you change it to? A factory radio or aftermarket? And if you don't mind my asking, was it was a factory radio, what did they charge you for the radio?
Thanks for the information. I suppose I have to remove the old radio to get the part number so I know what I am looking for? I'm not worried about changing it out, but hope I can find one...

Short circuit radio...my radio makes a loud circuit electrical popping noise
[QUOTE=glass_joe099;14990674]So usually what happens is I'm listening to the radio/CD player/Satellite whatever, and the driver's side front speaker crackles and shorts out. Lately the entire sound system cracks very loudly and shuts off. It sounds like a needle on a record player skipping. Then the clock blinks on and off like the power went out on an old alarm clock. Usually it comes back on its own or if I shut the truck off and open the door then restart it, the radio works fine. Oh did I mention the issue is very intermittent? Also the satellite was installed aftermarket. The button for Sirius was always there but the truck didn't come with the satellite receiver installed nor the antenna. I had to have that done on my own (I bought the truck used from Enterprise).
Today it worked fine until I shut the truck off at the deli. When I got back in and started it up, the clock was blank. Then it started blinking. Before I open the dash to look for loose or broken wires, has this happened to anyone before? I can load and eject CD's no problem. The compass and temperature work fine. I don't have the touch screen model, its the normal stereo with a small display screen above the
Usually this is caused by the wires where the door hinges. After opening and closing the doors a few hundred times, the wires actually become frail and break. You'll need to remove the rubber sleeve and chase down the broken wire or wires. I'm sure by now this isn't an issue for you, but maybe it'll help someone else.
