I'm not sure if you can get 3.73 in an SRW diesel truck? I think the gasser trucks can go with a 4.10 even? I'm not sure but it should be easy to see all that stuff on the ford website.
It depends on what wheels you like. Sadly, the styling of the 18" and 20" wheels will likely decide which rear gear you want. Can't get the 3.31 with 20" wheels. You can get 3.31 or 3.55 with the 18" wheels. I think you can get 3.55 or 3.73 with the 20" wheels.
For what you describe, you don't need a short gear, so, just go with which wheels you like. If you tow 16,500 every week all year long I'd say get 3.73 or 4.10, but that would be for a work truck, not a personal vehicle.
SRW is 3.31 or 3.55 only. Just did an order online. Pick 20 in wheels you get 3.55 selected for you. Pick 3.31, get 18 wheels.
The outside diameter isn't the same, its close but not the same as if you want to change wheel size you still have to recalibrate speed/odo.
As I stated above I have a cclb with 18" wheels, SRW, 3.31 electric locking rear diff. It really doesn't take that long to order what you want vs. finding one close to what you want in stock somewhere.
The last three trucks I have bought I ordered to my specs, that way I get exactly what I want.
There's no way I'll order a truck. I've read the horror stories on the wait. I'm to impatient for that process. When I find the right truck I'll buy it. It's been twelve years since I bought a new truck. This truck will probably outlast me so I'm going for it. I have several months before I buy. I'm just trying to figure out want I want.
You can get the twenty inch wheels on any truck I'm seeing. Thanks guys, there are alot of trucks on the show room floor that are close. I like some surprises on the truck I buy. (extras)
So I'm hearing the wheel size dictates what rear end you get?
Choose 20-inch wheels, get 3.55. Also, choose Rear Electronic Locking Differential, get 3.55. I think you only get to choose ratios if you get 18-inch wheels and non-locking differential. Which would be silly, as ELD is one of the most useful features in the truck, whether 4x4 or (especially) 4x2.

I never once felt like I needed 3.31.
Eld is available for both 3.31 and 3.55, with or without 4x4
I too had concerns about the 3.31 ratio. My 5er weighs about 11,000 lbs loaded for an extended (3 months) outing. Looking at the truck widow sticker it listed the tow package and the 3.31 E-lock differential. I was surprised at such a high ratio with the tow package. When I discovered this website I expressed concerns regarding this and was assured that due to the 6 speed trans and gobs of torque I would not have any problems with the 3.31. Well, I can now report my worries have been put to rest. This truck pulls! There is a 6 percent, about 4300' elevation, long climb on the I5 known as the Grapevine that I've towed various types of loads over since the mid sixties. Our first outing with the new truck (2014 F250 6.7 CC LWB Lariat) and 5er on the back was actually a joy. Going north I maintained whatever speed I wanted by passing the slow trucks and topped the summit at 65mph. On the way back (headed south same grade) I stayed in the lanes restricted for towing and the trucks because I wanted to see if it would accelerate after loosing momentum. After having to slow to about 20mph behind a truck and having a clear lane ahead I started gaining speed. I soon was at about 63mph in 3rd gear, motor wasn't straining, about a 1/2 mile from the summit it upshifted to 4th! and I was very impressed.
I'm very happy with the power this truck has for towing. My wife even noticed and commented "it's not straining at all".
There is a plus to having a high rear ratio and this much power. It can stay in a gear it likes and go faster than with a lower gear. My 04 6.0L with the 3.73 rear ratio would climb the same grade in 3rd but would struggle to hold 50-55mph at a much higher rpm.
So, a much more pleasant drive, quieter in the cab and a less stressed driver hoping not to have to get out of the throttle and lose all momentum.

and if you want a little more control, you can also use manual mode, or downshift yourself.. lots of control.

Congrats on the Great Truck...........
Enjoy her.............Pat her (the truck) on the butt once in awhile and she'll do fine.........
