95 Bronco 351 E40D 140k mi. Transmission suddenly started shifting rough especially from 1st to 2nd it gives a pretty good jolt.
It started doing this while driving. The tranny was serviced 1000 mi. ago drained converter and new filter. The problem started so quickly
it seems it would be electrical. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I had the exact same problem on my 94 F150 with the AODE. One day it just started shifting hard into 2nd. The other shifts were find. The shop dropped the pan and found that the 1-2 shift accumulator spring had broken into several pieces. Was around $250 total. After the fact I wish I had asked them to replace the other spings since the part was $2.
More info. The tranny shifts hard in all gears just especially hard when going from 1st to 2nd and park to reverse down shifts are fine. One thing to note I pressed the od cancel button and it cleared up for a short time but now is back to shifting rough.
I just delt with that on my '96 f-250 I had the overdrive light start flashing when it started shifting hard though. they found a code in the tranny that said the tranny was slipping so i guess it tries to compensate by upping the pressure some how???? Ford ripped mine out and found that the forward gear clutches were badly burnt and Luckly the extended waranty coverd replacing them all. now it runs better than it ever has, well at least since I have owned it. I would check to see if there are any codes in the tranny, I believe they are checked with the same OBDII thing, but it may be differant.
good luck mine cost $1500, but luckly the warranty paid for all but $200
this is called femm mode. failure effects managment mode. the pcm senses a trans malfunction, usually slippage and in turn delivers full epc pressure shifts the ensure no furthur slippage. but dont let this go too long. its not good. get the truck to the dealer and they will check for codes etc. your convertor may be slipping or a solenoid pack may have went south. im guessing you have an e4od. a simple service may solve it. in the mean time unhook your battery for a few minutes. the hardness will go away but chances are it will come back.
I had the same problem with my 94 F150 E4OD trans a couple years ago. It logged a 500 code, I cant remember exactly the number but it said that the torque converter clutch was slipping. I spoke to many trans shops and they all told me that it was very common for the T.C.C to slip. They said to rebuild the trans and replace the torque converter for about $2400.00. I decided to just replace the Torque converter since it only had 55,000 miles and the fluid looked very fresh. The problem percisted after I changed the T.C. so I started looking at what controles the T.C. and found the T.C. solenoid located just above the filter had a broken solder joint at the circuit board. I soldered the conection and have had no problems for the past few years and 34,000 miles. Check for any codes, the check engine light may not come on for a trans problem, it didn't for mine.
The lockup clutch in your converter is slipping. You reset the computer, but the problem will return. Hard shifting is due to the increased pressure setting the computer uses to compensate for the slipping. Mine went out at 116K and I ended up having the whole tranny rebuilt. My trans shop says the E4OD has 75k to 175k life span, so you are probably due. The cost was $1400 plus tax and installation, $1800 out-the-door.
