Good shop advice

Having some problems with my truck, rear differential seized up while driving down 35, need some advice on good shops in the Waco area. I'd prefer to stay away from any of the Ford dealerships due to the cost. Not sure if this is the wrong place to be asking for advice, but anything is greatly appreciated.

Don't know anything about shops in Waco, but if you can get it to the Dallas area via trailer or something, Dallas Differential can fix it.

Thanks for the reply, I ended up having the truck taken to the towing company's shop for the night since I don't really have a place to keep a dead truck. Its going to get looked at in the morning and we'll decide what to do from there. When it first happened I got out and looked under the truck to find the drive shaft laying on the ground and the inside of the differential housing where the pinion shaft would go glowing bright orange.

Wow. Broke the pinion right off. Haven't seen that before. Cheapest bet is to find a used 8.8" axle and swap the whole thing in (or is that not an 8.8"?). Rebuilding that one will be pricey I'm sure. Probably lots of junk parts inside...

I was thinking the same thing, go find one in decent shape off of a scrap truck and swap them out. I'm not exactly sure on the axle specs. It's a 1995 F350 PowerStroke 2wd with 3.55 gears if that tells you anything. I'm pretty sure it's toasted on the inside. I'll have to look at the axle code on the door and do a little research.

That makes it a 10.25" Sterling. You can use any 92-97 F250HD or F-350 SRW rear axle and swap it in. I'd assume that everything in there is scrap in the short term and just stick another axle under the truck to get it rolling again.

There are at least two F-350s in the Waco shop of the Pick-N-Pull junkyard chain. A straight axle from a truck, without any brake or electrical parts, is $49.99 in their stores, plus a $4.99 core and tax. (No connection other than as a long-time customer.)

Pick-n-Pull - Waco (Main Store)

14401 N Interstate Highway 35
Elm Mott, TX 76640 US
254-829-1572

<table cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><th class="col1">Make</th><th class="col2">Model</th><th class="col3">Year</th><th class="col4">Row</th><th class="col5">Date On Yard</th></tr><tr><td class="col1">Ford</td><td class="col2">F-350</td><td class="col3">97</td><td class="col4">0089</td><td class="col5">09/02/2014</td></tr><tr class="alt"><td class="col1">Ford</td><td class="col2">F-350</td><td class="col3">96</td><td class="col4">0085</td><td class="col5">11/25/2014</td></tr></tbody></table>
However, the complementary site, row52. com says that the 1996 is a dually and you can't use its rear axle. But if you want steps from a SuperCab dually or Powerstroke parts...

http://row52.com/Vehicle/Index/1FTJX35F3TEA47027

The 1997 doesn't have a picture, but it is a Blue 2WD Crew Cab:
http://row52.com/Vehicle/Index/1FTJW35F8VEA65660

And four F-250s:
<table cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><th class="col1">Make</th><th class="col2">Model</th><th class="col3">Year</th><th class="col4">Row</th><th class="col5">Date On Yard</th></tr><tr><td class="col1">Ford</td><td class="col2">F-250</td><td class="col3">96</td><td class="col4">0080</td><td class="col5">07/17/2014</td></tr><tr class="alt"><td class="col1">Ford</td><td class="col2">F-250</td><td class="col3">95</td><td class="col4">0094</td><td class="col5">11/07/2014</td></tr><tr><td class="col1">Ford</td><td class="col2">F-250</td><td class="col3">93</td><td class="col4">0080</td><td class="col5">07/16/2014</td></tr><tr class="alt"><td class="col1">Ford</td><td class="col2">F-250</td><td class="col3">93</td><td class="col4">0083</td><td class="col5">05/28/2014</td></tr></tbody></table>
The 1995 F-250 that hit the yard on November 5 looks like a good bet.

No pictures on the other three, but here's their links:

I'd go get one of those trucks' rear axles, preferably the one with the lowest apparent miles on it. Most shops should be able to perform the swap competently as it's relatively easy.

Edit: Row52 seems to show a bunch of others at another area junkyard, Wrench-A-Part Belton.

Same deal for F-250s.

I'd say you have no shortage of axle donors down there.

Thanks man that really helps a lot! Haven't gone to the truck today but I'll tell the guys at that shop that idea. I'd go for it myself but I don't have the tools in Waco.

Sometimes there are people hanging around the Pick-N-Pull who will happily pull stuff for you for a fee. Alternately, you can go to the listing of the truck on row52.com, create a listing and see if there's a parts puller in the area that can help you.

Also, if you find an F-250HD or F-350 that's got the same configuration as you do (trans, 2WD, SRW and same bed length) take its driveshaft. Yours may have been damaged by the incident and it will be cheaper for you to grab that one and put new U-joints into it prior to installing it than to discover your original driveshaft shattering down the road, or being badly out of balance and then shattering. At PnP, they're cheap enough.

Yep I found a donor truck at PnP, it's got a fully intact axle with the same ratio just not a limited slip. I ran out of time today to get it off so I'll probably go back tomorrow and finish. Good point on the drive shaft, I was just going pull the axle at the U joint going into the diff housing but now I may just take the whole thing. The only thing that worries me about that plan is I don't remember if that truck was a long bed since my 95 is. Right now figuring how I'm going to get the U joints taken care of on the donor truck.

I did indeed, went into PnP around 9 yesterday morning and pulled it out from under the truck. Really wish I had a helper with me, those SOBs are heavy. It should work fine, just waiting for the guy running the shop to give me a call and let me know how it's going. Shouldn't take too long.

Bringing this thread back from the dead I suppose, anyways finally got my truck back from the shop. What took so long was waiting on NAPA to get me a U joint that would fit the yoke on the new axle I pulled and the drive shaft on my truck.

First a few pics of the carnage from the old axle/diff

And finally the finished product, thanks guys!

Congratulations on getting your truck back on the road! That's a lot of hassle to go through, but I'm glad you were able to get it taken care of. I assume from reading the posts above that the donor axel didn't cost too much, but do you mind my asking how much the shop charged to do the swap for you?

The donor axle from a 97 F250 gasser from PnP was $161 and some change, I don't remember the exact price. The price from the shop for having it done was $400. I could have done it myself but I don't have a lift or some of the tools required.
