I would try more than one of each engine to get a better feel for each. I looked for a year and a half to find a 7.3 Excursion for a reasonable price. The first couple of 7.3s and one of the 6.0s that I drove were real dogs; I knew from my friend's truck that the 7.3 should run better than that. Plus 19-21 mpg (hand calculated) highway is awesome!
My comments were directed toward their NVH attributes - in comparison to my current gasoline V10; not the engines capabilities themselves.
As my intended future use is for possible heavier towing (and more amenities) I still may very well purchase/use either engine. Both provide more torque than my current V10 - AND as I drive like the grandpa - should suffice me well.
If I was willing to spend more $ I'd and go whole hog get a newer version of the F450; but for this Cheap Charlie, money is a factor!
Get on cars.com and start searching. A quick search revealed a 2007 F-250 Lariat, 4x4 V-10 auto, FX-4, regular cab, in Denham Springs, asking price $22.950.
The truck you want is out there, you just need to utilize more resources to find it.
Army RET recently posted that his budget is $10k plus trade-in, so $22,950 is just too far beyond what he's willing to spend.
I had also searched for a V10 using cars.com and only found one (not sure if it's the same one or not), but I know it too was outside his price range; seems like they just don't get sold that often. Even when I was looking for a truck on there at the end of last year I only saw a handful of V10s for sale.
I just pointed out a nicely equipped '05 6.0 Liter Lariat with an asking price under $10k to him. I figure that with the mileage on it, the motor is probably in good shape, and the low price (especially after trading in his V10) would give him a reserve that could help cushion any necessary repairs.

-Kaw-Liga.
I agree "Kaw" - the entire time I had my (new) '08 6.4l Diesel, I wished that I had searched and found an '07 (used) 6.0 with low mileage. The '05 - '07 series were really nice trucks and the later the 6.0 you find, the better. All the bugs were worked out by then. The V10 mileage always scared me as mine was going to be a daily driver as well as carry my slide-in truck camper on the weekends. The 6.0 gives you more to work with (tuning, aftermarket stuff) than the 7.3 did! Good luck with your search/decision Army RET!
